Formulation Chemistry and Material Development Manager

The Chemistry and Material Development Manager is responsible for managing the chemistry and material-based efforts at WaveFront primarily as support of the production roll to roll UV cast & cure processes. Production chemical support includes monitoring production chemical inventory, interfacing with chemical suppliers to evaluate new materials, coordinating chemical purchases, and troubleshooting production formulations and processes. Development efforts include hands-on laboratory testing and formulation development, management of the scientists and technicians on the coatings team, and literature searches to stay on top of current technology and potential regulations. Successful completion of drug screen and background check will be required.

Essential Functions

Production Support

  • Process development and troubleshooting
  • Monitor production chemical inventory and coordinate chemical purchasing
  • Report quarterly purchases and usage to accounting
  • Interface with sales reps for new and ongoing purchases
  • Assist with environmental, health, and safety considerations

Development

  • Manage team of one chemist and 1-2 technicians
  • Work with other departments for continuous improvements
  • Project management for new UV-cured materials such as transfer coatings, substrate adhesion, PET-Acrylic bonding agent, and high RI polymer coating for display applications
  • Firsthand laboratory testing and formulation development
  • Work with suppliers to evaluate new materials
  • Prepare reports for the executive team

 

Qualifications

  • 8-10 years in a manufacturing formulation environment supporting roll to roll coating, printing, or converting.
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, Materials Science, or related fields.
  • Metrology experience.
  • Experience writing and editing general lab and production procedures.
  • Experience in a lab developing inks, paints, or coatings.

 

Additional skills

  • Experience in formulating energy-curable materials.
  • Understanding of chemistry and structure/property relationships in coatings.
  • Experience with material characterization and application techniques (FTIR, hardness, adhesion, weathering, etc.).
  • Experience with optics and polymers materials for optical applications.
  • Experience with Design of Experiments.
